U87AI vs Behringer B-1

25 ottobre 2017

@ChesterClinClin
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Gracias!
@nebrasca53
Si cuesta mucho no quiere decir que sea buena
@mascaratproducciones
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Great! Thank you!
@nebrasca53
@serserjj
@nebrasca53
@TuGinecologo
@MeTuLHeD
Ok. This is a crazy comparison. Love it! Sure, there is a subtle difference in sound between the two. But a difference worth $3500? Just goes to show how far budget gear has come. Would LOVE to see how all of the "microphone gurus" out there would fare in a double blind test. I'm sure the results would be interesting to say the least.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Cost is not for materials, I'm sure. You pay the name but, as in many big brand you got a great quality. But, I'm sure is possible to find great sounds also in other and less expansive mics. As you can see in the channel, there are many "crazy" comparsion. Some are just for curiosity, no more. The fact is: most brands use the U87 as a standard and example and say "it sounds like..." so my curiosity is "realy? let's try side by side." Thank you.
@britishlord5606
me too! A blind test would be the "Gurus" doing serious "mistakes" on your tendencious choices!!!
@PaoloBalestri Autore
***** Right. In real world when you make a job, if you use as Pro, you find lot of difference when you put the mics under pressure. Anyhow the B-1, and the Studio Projects C1 too (clone) are both great "797 Audio" products.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Some people say this: no one of this mic is made as the other one. No controls on the build chain in this mic, so no one sounds like the other. Some times shit, sometimes fine.
@nebrasca53
THE b1 is excellent, if not superior to the other that has excelled only the brand.
@jayrama8769
lmao!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@jayrama8769
funny man right here
@TeatruSubtitrat
I'm pretty sure I and probably nobody could tell the difference on passages with no esses on these two mics because they have pretty much te same character. On the passages with at least one sibiliant sound like an 's' or whatever, I could tell which is which 100% of the time. On the b1 esses are much more agressive while on the u87 they are controlled like it had a built-in deesser.
@Maogmusic1
Podrías ayudarme Paolo !!! Grazie :D !! Behringer B1 vs Samson C01u Pro ??
@PaoloBalestri Autore
C01u Pro is an USB mic, not over 48-16 and is a cheap mic. Good solution for podcasters, great for part time users. You can't connect the C01 to any kind of preamp, so can't upgrade the sound. The B-1 instead, is a classical XLR, have no much self noise, you can connect it to any pro device and have a great sound. This is a 747 Audio top mic clone, If you use it powered by a Tube-Pre with a good Tube iside, this mic can surprise you. The C01u Pro is similar to the RodeNT-USB, nice sound but not for pro users. If you are looking for an USB Mic with high top sound, you can looking for BlueYeti USB, big, usable vith iPad iPod and iPhone too. Or you can listen a sE Electronics X1USB, 192k24bit and great sound. Not works on Apple Devices but run great on any Android and also Macbooks or PC. Here a comparsion with U87: https://youtu.be/qwwAFhjGqGU Another USC is the Apogee, but have no headphone as the C01U Pro. But, it sounds amazing despite the dimensions: it is big as a thumb.
@mstPredator
B1 or at2020?
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Very diferent mics. B1 is large capsule, sounds warm but, it is made from 797Audio for Behringer, not from a mic builder with his name on top. But, most of times sounds good. AT2020 is a great hardware, but IMHO it is too much brilliant for voice job. It is a small capsule mic. For voice I prefer the B1.
@mstPredator
*****  ok,thanks a lot!!!Then,scarlett 2i2(2nd generation) or  steinberg UR22 MK2 ?)
@mstPredator
very hard choices...
@PaoloBalestri Autore
mmm... Steinberg/Yamaha VS Focusrite... Actually the 2i4 may be the more near to the UR22. I'm a Focusrite fun... but the Steinberg may have a Cubase inside! Scarlet got Ableton Live... mmmh, not so great!
@mstPredator
***** so,the applications on the Steinberg are better than on Scarlett?)
@PaoloBalestri Autore
yes, Cubase AI included.
@nebrasca53
@nebrasca53
@LukeSimpson
How about a blind video comparison, where you do multiple sound samples from "mic A" and "mic B," only revealing which one is which at the end of the video?
@alexandretravi
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Hi Alexandre, tis is not a race, it is to understand the difference from a standard. Thank you.
@TheKingKorg
Wow, thank you for great examples. B1 is actual copy of u87, but missing important eq circuit. I used data from microphone parts site, and audio from your site to create impulse response that converts b1 or b2 to u87. Just load response and apply to B1 you wil be amazed. Feel free to share link. app.box.com/s/qlm2ho3yhmomfpj0awlb7qqd25pw4osy
@yamdigger
If the Behringer is a copy of the Neumann, then based on this video, it's a damn, good copy.
@ivandubinsky1857
Hard to tell the difference and I'm listening through very high quality headphones.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Ivan Dubinsky You should to try to download the wave file: https://www.paolobalestri.com/blog/test-microfoni/
@bluesuiterhairo
Same. That is why I bought the Behringer
@djtommykeys
@PaoloBalestri Thank you for the wave files. Superb!
@mascaratproducciones
@PaoloBalestri Autore
May be. But, some of customers do not give you the opportunity to record anything if you use a B1. I know all the stuff and is not the B1 or the TLM or the U87 that make real sound but, if you have this gun in studio you may have also some big customers who pay you much then others. If not, not. It's just business, not real world where someone can sing a hit with a B1.
@MilleAnniBGD
2000$ price difference !!!! Holly shit .... hahahaaa .... B1 is overkill for the money you pay .....
@PaoloBalestri Autore
And this is used... just 50 buks!
@MilleAnniBGD
I guess so...i owned one B1 some 8,9 years ago and did me a lot of nice "home " recordings with my "Golden Age 73" preamp .... after that , i was recording some material "seriously" with U87 and AKG C414 thru several diferent hi end preamps , including Avalon, Universal Audio , Focusrite and DBX .....honestly, the diference in sound i heard between all of them and B1 was definitively not even close to 10% of proportional price diference....and after 32 years of playing diferent instruments , i know what i'm talking about ...
@danbolivar3564
WOW! ... The only difference is that the B1 has slightly higher self-noise... But the response seems very similar.
@TeatruSubtitrat
Actually there's quite a difference on the sibilant passages - this is were most clones fall short to the original mics. B1 is a great mic anyway, it won't stop you from having a great recorded performance, you just need to give the deesser a higher threshold and you have the neumann sound.
@MillenniumLoc
@PaoloBalestri Autore
... I must to learn Russian! What is "помидоры"? :)
@MillenniumLoc
This is a vegetable, I just said the expression is, that is, a lot XD
@DenisUspeshny
@DenisUspeshny
@PaoloBalestri it means - sibbilant as fuck
@lindabarteau9006
Read my full review of the Behringer B-1 at: http://creativetechnerds.jimdo.com/gear-4/
@vengadorarkamuz
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Jc Marvi It is pretty different in a better listen. In a common use, a daily use it sounds fine and better than most expensive mics. You can pay this 90 bucks. I think it is a good work machine. It is easy to upgrade.
@Castillochando
Hola Paolo.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Gracias Marcos! http://recordinghacks.com/microphones/Behringer/B-1
@1mistaGROOVE
Excellent experiment. Based on your video I have just placed an order for the Behringer B-1. Ciao fratello. God Bless
@cgonzt5636
How was it?
@1mistaGROOVE
@cgonzt5636 It is a solid mic. I still use it for my weekly radio broadcasts.
@yamdigger
The Neumann is 32 times more expensive the the Behringer, yet, try as I might, I could hardly hear any difference.
@ninjabluewings
Peter Hopkins Yes i was thinking the same myself and i have 16 years under my belt as a sound engineer 🤔🤔
@emailme23
put on monitoring headphones
@yamdigger
Whatever Most end listeners aren’t using monitoring headphones.
@johndolores315
The difference in detail is beyond anyones capability to hear. What you are paying for is essentially slightly lower noise, the brand and the better build quality. Also the mic has a flatter response which any mixer would edit anyways.
@tommasonaviglio5961
Ma il behringer b1va bene per Linux?
@PaoloBalestri Autore
@fidelmflores1786
I cannot say which is better. Both are very nice.
@The-Aether-Show
Ma sei Bojack Horseman?
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Yari Lion Pomponi Fabrizio Pucci!
@The-Aether-Show
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Yari Pomponi Non potrei imitarlo ma grazie 😊
@TeatruSubtitrat
Both mics have about the same character and are quite interchangable, but the sibilance on the u87 is much more controlled. I can definetly distinguish them every time where there is an essy passage. The esses on the behringer are a lot more agressive, while on the u87 it sounds like the mic has a built-in deesser. Ayway, no doubt the B-1 sounds and looks great for the price. Actually I guess the u87 is the mic it is modelled after judging by it's sound character and even the shape.
@ndobrev
I hear huge differences, b-1 has that hiss, but I like it
@nachocabrera
Exactly. Neumman It is somewhat more opaque and blunt
@FunnyGuyTimmy
There is a higher noise in the B-1. Is that just me? Hay un ruido más alto en el B-1. ¿Soy sólo yo?
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Maybe
@FunnyGuyTimmy
There is a higher noise in the B-1. Is that just me? Hay un ruido más alto en el B-1. ¿Soy sólo yo?
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Yes, it is noisy. Too much imho

@FunnyGuyTimmy
There is a higher noise in the B-1. Is that just me? Hay un ruido más alto en el B-1. ¿Soy sólo yo?
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Yes, it may be more than U87. But, I try it also in a different pre and it sounds better so, for the price may be a good one.
@thebusinessfirm9862
G'day Tim, I think you're right mate. I hear slightly more noise in the B1, although these two mics sounds shockingly close - as I mentioned in Italian elsewhere in these comments. Perhaps you should do the same comparison on your channel. Cheers, Steve.
@yamdigger
Yes there is. But any good noise-canceling, post-production software can easily squelch even that.
@gamesdeprataaouro1317
O B1 também é um pouquinho menos grave
@FunnyGuyTimmy
There is a higher noise in the B-1. Is that just me? Hay un ruido más alto en el B-1. ¿Soy sólo yo?

@AstraMusicOfficial
Thank you for the video, Paolo! I was wondering whether there was any difference between these two condensers. To be honest I can't tell any difference! By the way, I'm sorry I don't understand Italian, but you have a very nice strong yet soft voice, excellent for narration. Italian is a lovely musical language to listen to!
@PaoloBalestri Autore
AstraMusicOfficial It can sound nearly but if you use the pcm files and a good headphone you can listen the difference. B1 is more sibilant and not so warm.
@AstraMusicOfficial
@PaoloBalestri Thanks for your reply. Just after your watching your video, I went to Thomann and heard singing comparisons and, yes, I agree, The B1 has a slightly harsh treble, grainy overtone, whereas the Neumann is nicely smooth. Still, it's more than 2,000 Euros more expensive!
@saxofonistacr
great but, why are you getting all those mics when you have the neumann
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Someone collect butterflies 🦋! I love to test this! Thank you 😊
@phillkard
Is there anything in the world that makes Italian language sound bad? lol
@RobertWindley
Ok hold on is it me or is it the great speaking voice of Mr. Balestri.I hear very little difference between the two mics .I have a Behringer B-1 and just ordered a Neumann 102.I should have viewed this video first.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Ciao Robert, thank you for your message. B-1 is very close to the U87Ai for voices like mine is. Used on a good pre may became better or not. A Neve or a Golden Audio Project became more voiced in medium frequencies, fine for deep voices, in a Tube pre may be better for medium frequencies sound voices. But, it is a very very nice mic. Someone warn that not all the B-1 or B2 are made with the same components, so sometimes may sound not identical one from each other. But, it is a great piece of gear for the price. The TLM 102 is another story. I have one, may sounds fine but it is a non easy mic. Take a look: https://youtu.be/1BOkJ1IrOXw and here with the TLM 103 https://youtu.be/8nMiAeBnK0c Hope this help
@RobertWindley
Thank you for your reply.I purchased the Neumann 102 as a upgrade to m y Behringer.I just received it so I haven't had a chance to evaluate it yet.But thank you again for your amazing videos.I believe your voice would sound good on a two dollar mic.Thanks for your help.
@thebusinessfirm9862
@RobertWindley G'day Rob, just wondering what your thoughts are regarding the B1 versus the 102, since you posted this comment four months ago? In your own experience, how close have you found the two mics to be on your own voice? Appreciate any feedback you can give, mate. Cheers.
@Felmyst
Is very similar. But, the U87 sounds cleaner. A little, but noticeable.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Yes it is. Without a mic chain the difference is noticeable.
@thebusinessfirm9862
For me, both of these microphones sound quite close, although the B1 is slightly noisier. Thank you for this review, mate.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Happy this help
@MusicTutorJay
I am thinking of maiku k47 capsule for behringer b1, will it be any good
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Yes. May be. But may become darker
@112233aaify
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Li vale? Per me è sì! :) ❤️
@112233aaify
@ritzcrimson
Woww.. the differentiation very less 😅😅
@annlee768
Ciao.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
@annlee768
@PaoloBalestri Non posso ancora acquistare un preamplificatore separato. Userò Focusrite Scarlett Solo (3a generazione).
@PaoloBalestri Autore
@annlee768 ottima scelta
@lilwane8493
Buon pomeriggio.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Sembra un microfono onesto. Sicuramente silenzioso.
@BYD_LRT
Does the Beijing 797 Audio Co. still make the microphones for Behringer?
@PaoloBalestri Autore
My last B2Pro still have the 797 Audio stamped writing.
@leonesdelsol3499
this is really interesting, i have recorded all my vocals with B-1 and i'm really satisfied. If you go to my channel, you can listen vocals recorded with this good mic
@EllencyOfficial
Ciao Paolo! :)
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Io ce li ho the due!
@EllencyOfficial
@PaoloBalestri preferisci quindi sempre il SE x1s? :D
@PaoloBalestri Autore
@EllencyOfficial Adesso in particolare! 😂 si, meno rumore e più smalto
@fabiogavioli3536
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Dai un occhiata qui: https://youtu.be/pzLaaI-p63M?t=913
@fabiogavioli3536
@PaoloBalestri Grazie! Non ne ho mai sentito parlare. Sembra davvero valido!
@PaoloBalestri Autore
@fabiogavioli3536
:) Ti farò sapere come mi trovo.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
@fabiogavioli3536 Speriamo! Grazie a te! Un abbraccio. Fammi sapere.
@christianlaville2382
Behringer B1 has got a bright and crisp sound. It gives more presence to the voice. That's what I like. I can't believe Neumann is so expensive. Conclusion : today it's possible to get a professional sound with little money.
@TVPActivismIsrael
the behringer is harsh sounding and exaggerated. the Neumann gives more natural and more round and pleasant sound. but there must be cheaper mics that give a similar result without the killer price tag.
@meldmagic
🤠 If you can solder you can get a u87 clone & microphone-parts.com.
@lundsweden
The U87 sounds a bit more bassy to me, but the B1 is a good mic for sure!
@yamdigger
And iZotope has an EQ matching module that can easily close that small gap. In fact, you could use the audio comparison that Paulo made as your reference. As someone above intimated: “ We no longer have to spend thousands of dollars to get a great sounding mic.”
@PaoloBalestri Autore
At the end of the game this is the right thing! You can have great sound without killing the pig.
@diegoconti2646
@PaoloBalestri Autore
@AndrásKemény
wow. first up, sir, what a great speaking voice. it's simply a delight to hear it. second... wow, does the neumann blow the behringer straight out of the water. the aggressive sibilance of the b1 is made very obvious by the comparison, and i'm listening it on a macbook's speakers, and STILL the difference is obvious. not saying the b1 is bad, but the neumann has the upper hand without a question. its price, though, its price... horror.
@djtommykeys
Paulo's voice is always smooth as silk. Thanks for the video. Impressive for the B-1.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Grazie 🙏
@missiskitty99
Even if I was a millionaire i would not dare to throw my money out of the window like that! For this little difference it is absolutely not necessary anymore to pay so much money. Now I go further and say it would be really stupid to pay such an amount of money for a little difference you can easily fix in the mix at the end of the day using an deesser or an EQ! I say, Behringer for President, Ulli the Robinhood of the Musicans!
@PaoloBalestri Autore
😂 thank you
@elbarrigueta
I have closed my eyes and I couldn't find the difference, maybe I have some problem with my ears, so I will buy Behringer B1. The only difference I have found is the 2400 euros difference in price.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
It is one of the best 797 Audio, like old RODE nt1. Thank you 🙏
@diegoconti2646
la capsula si potrebbe sostituirla con una k87?
@PaoloBalestri Autore
