U87AI vs Rode NTK (valvolare)

21 aprile 2018

Vuol dire qualcosa?

<http://dubmus.com/modding-a-rode-ntk/>

Io ho trovato invece questi:

<http://www.thetubestore.com/Tubes/6922-E88CC-Tube-Types/Telefunken-E88CC-6922>

e la meno costosa

<http://www.thetubestore.com/Tubes/6922-E88CC-Tube-Types/6H23n-EB-6922>

@PeachesChrenko
Wow thank you ... nice comparison ... you have a beautiful voice
@PaoloBalestri Autore
You are very kind! Thank you.
@PeachesChrenko
You're welcome ...which mic do you prefer?
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Still the u87. You can use it on a Pre and it may sound in other ways. Anyhow, the NTK may be one of the best in that range of cost.
@PeachesChrenko
Ok thank you. Your website is very helpful also ... love the clip comparisons. I'm a female vocalist with a home recording studio looking to upgrade my mic. The U87 sounds great but is out of my price range. I'm researching mics in $500 - $700 range hence the Rode NTK which brought me to your video.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
This is one of the best I have testes in that range. Also, with a small extra is possible to chenge the tube with another one more warm. I think this is a great mic for female voice, not so aggressive in the high end top frequency and warm.
@PeachesChrenko
Awesome Paolo and thank you so much for your video and help :)
@frederikgroborsch3367
thank you! i think the u87ai comes closer to the rode nt1 than to the ntk.... don´t you think ?
@PaoloBalestri Autore
I was seducted by NTK, and his sond nice and glossy. Currently I'm making a comparsion of 6 Tubes working on this mic, today I receive a Mullard CV2492, need a couple of days for burn than put in timeline for the comparsion side by side, than will do a check with new capsule too. It need time to do all the job, but promise to became a great DIY mic. But no more the NTK. After lot of comparsion, I forgot the NT1, this Cinderella, than I back to the NT1 files, relisten and yes! You are right. Powered by the same pre it sounds pretty close. The mic is ugly, small, seems a toy, but you are right. I want to make a second check on another pre, now I'm pretty curious. The because is I remember used it on a Tascam, many time ago, and it sounded boxed, so... I want deepen. Thank you for the note. Thank you so much.
@marcus92101.
@Musica_Infantil_TV
Gran Test Paolo y gran voz !!!
@PaoloBalestri Autore
The NTK got his own original power and the tube inside is the original one. The U87 is in to the Focusrite Saffire transistor, with no Liquid emulator. Thank you.
@bentyreman5769
no doubt the U87ai sounds more natural to me, you have such a great voice, thankyou for taking the time to upload this.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Thank you! Kind and nice!
@BeharNeli
U87 sound way better in his voice. I own both mics. Rode NTK is a great mic. I don't like much in acoustic instruments. In some voices especially on female you can get wicked results. It shines in some voices and the singers are very satisfied with NTK. Neumann U87AI is off course great mic but never shines. After all Neumann U87AI is better mic but if you own AKG C414 XLII you have not a great reason to spend 3500 USD on U87AI.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Hi! Thank you for your post. By my point of view, the AKG C414 XLII sound too hight. Still remain inside to kind of mics with 2K lack and 10/15K push. But, I will be happy to pubblic a comparsion one day, as soon back owner of that mic. Instead of a U87AI, very expansive one, if you are only a Speaker, so not need any extra pattern, with about 400/500 USD you can buy or build by yourself a S-87 DIY mic. It is a great alternative for voice talent.
@mistaptvz
Hello, Paolo! What preamp did you use? I think NTK sounds closer to U87 and the reason is classy preamp
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Ciao! I do not use any extra preamp, just put inside to Focusrite Saffire 56. Out from Liquid preamps, just inside to the channel 7.
@CraigBuffington
Are you kidding me? That sounded incredible! You have a fantastic voice, one of the richest I have ever heard! You should endorse Focusrite... I have presonus and am going to head to Guitar Center today!
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Craig Buffington Thank you!!
@RogerPelegrin
Grazie Paolo!! What about for recording a male rock baritone/tenor type voice? (Bono, Eddie Vedder, Sting) ? What do you think about Rode NTK? Grazie !!
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Oh... this is a great mic in his price level, you know. Very low noise. In solo voice is amazing. Inside to a mix for a song I have not big experience with this mic. Some singers change the tube and the capsule because the sibilants that came out in the mix. Some others with tenor voice say to love the Neumann TLM103 because of air, so it is very personal taste. In my humble opinion this mic may works fine for that kind of voices, also because of the warm and glossy sound. Depend on what mix or kind of song. Here you can see a test with some tubes: https://youtu.be/IPuD7EnsLFA?list=PL-0gBBEjdqb3-w1Xw__guLb_p56JjCBBD I cange the capsule and it became more linear than in this test. Still have no time to finish the videotest with new capsule. I think it sounds similar to an AKG mid level range as the P420 sounds. But have a glossy sound - with the original capsule - and it is not really a neutral sound. Thank you!
@alphilips6212
Roger, Nickelback recorded all the vocals from their biggest selling album. That says alot about the mic's ability. Good for higher dB recording like guitar/bass amp, etc.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
I made an audiobook with this. Poetry. Need warm and soft sound, recorded very near to the mic and the result was great. Actually a non high db recording, just a breath. The goal was to be in the head of the listener. It was with original capsule and tube. The original tube create a soft bottom sound around 100/200 hrz, it seems a pillow.
@exitoenbusca3655
@leseditionslibres5198
@PaoloBalestri Autore
A proper tube make difference. Thank you!
@ginbeer4327
is this review a joke???
@ElBlancoPapi
Yeah, it shows how gullible you have to be to buy a U87 for Thousands of dollars when a $529 mic rivals it all the way!!!!
@henryperkins8392
@ElBlancoPapi some people have a hard time reconciling the fact that there isn't much of a different between most modern microphones, you can get GREAT results with almost any mic if you know what you're doing but as always, the SONG IS KING. LEARN YOUR CRAFT BOYS AND GIRLS
@jayrama8769
he is talking from far away... and whispering while up close.... yeah not much of a difference there.... however have a rapper who screams... or a singer who is super loud... you will be very happy you have the u87.... it sounds way better for music, for basic recordings go buy a fuckin piece a shit $20 dollar mic, it doesn't matter
@SpectroMaledikto
Che meraviglia di voce.... Fantastico ! Grazie
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Si nu babbà!
@SpectroMaledikto
@SpectroMaledikto
Paolo Balestri .... MI SONO ISCRITTO ! PS. ho uno studio di registrazione... come ho bisogno di te ti chiamo ! 😁😁😁
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Beh, grazie! Molto onorato.
@callmedeno
how did you get of the bacjground noise at the beginning?
@PaoloBalestri Autore
callmedeno Isabella say she play it with Ultrabit on Logic. Musicinbtwin.it
@alexjaroff449
Hello, Paolo! Great review! I know that after downloading to Youtube, the sound quality changes. I suffer in the choice between Rode NTK and Neumann tlm103 for vocals. I need your advice. Thank you! And is the difference between these microphones great?
@PaoloBalestri Autore
There are lot of differences. Here you can find the pcm wav 48/42 of the NTK original recording. https://www.paolobalestri.com/blog/test-microfoni-2/ In this page below the pcm 48/24 from TLM103 https://www.paolobalestri.com/blog/test-microfoni/ Recorded in different moments but you can listen the difference, IMHO. Thank you my friend.
@ElBlancoPapi
No wonder the Rode NTK is such a Huge rival to the u87 and other Neumann mics, considering their prices and the much lower cost of the Rode mics, especially the NTK!! Most people are just swayed by labels and reputation and will defend to the death their choice to spend Thousands of dollars when you don't really *need* to....they are known as Gear Snobs...and Most of them, with ALL their Many thousands of dollars of fancy gear, NEVER produce ANY music that finds ANY success and are often Bested by people with lower-cost home studios!!
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Yeah! may be! I'm not a fun or a snob. I got many mics, expensive and cheap. I have because I am a curious man and also because I need to interface myself with Studios and them got Neumann. Some got the big black Sony but I not! :) Before the mic there is the man. After that, any good mic works.
@ElBlancoPapi
Argue all you want....I am painfully aware of how desperately people will defend their costly purchases and will NOT allow their Pride to accept that maybe their purchases are Not usually justified!!
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Yep! May be! But, not all is made to make money! Some of us spend lot of money on hardware because they want do it. Do you need an iPhone? Do you need a MacBook? Do you need a Pro Tools? I guess no. But... but I have a customer who pay me 10 times the cost of a U87 if my equipment is near to his one. So... I buy a U87 and delivery the sound he want. You don't?
@darrellbeets7758
@PaoloBalestri wow good phillosofy my man
@ElBlancoPapi
This is an established FACT: When the brands are known, people almost Always choose the Neumann mics and will fight to the bitter end!! Yet, in Many *blind* tests, the Rode NTK always does MUCH better and sometimes even BEATS the more "affordable" Neumann mics (which still cost 2x as much or much MORE)!! Does a Neumann u87 or 47 etc sound any better than the NTK?? Well, I would sure as hell hope they do!!!! But does a mic costing $4,000+ sound about 8x Better than the Rode?? NOT A CHANCE!!! At MOST, maybe the very expensive Neumann mics do sound better....about 5-10% better (at MOST)!! If you think spending nearly $5,000 instead of $500 is justified to get a 5% "better" sound, then go for it...... Not this guy!!!
@PaoloBalestri Autore
David Belcher try to listen the Atlantic Phonic mic I build recently: 500 bucks and sounds greater than Neumann. To me!
@2-Corrupt
Nt1 all the way
@ScoobyKong
that's why u 87's are really a professional grade mic for studios, and NTK probably aren't as common.. you pay steeply for that extra bump in definition, but for a pro recording it's an investment that makes sense, without question. For a home user, a used NTK is fine.. I own one.(.wish I had not paid full new price for it though at 700), and as someone noted the sibilance is pretty obvious in this test...
@GardensoftheAncientsHerbal
especially if your really wanted a less bassy sound you could just mix it down a lil...
@ElBlancoPapi
These are the same people who Constantly lead beginners astray and dishearten them or cajole them into spending unnecessary money because they will put down Anything made by affordable companies like Behringer or Art etc.....yet, when they are made to actually do a *blind* sound test, many of the self-important gear snobs will choose Behringer and Art over the much more expensive gear!!! Let them spend Most of THEIR money and their time in forums thumbing their nose at anything that isn't expensive.....be smart and spend Most of YOUR time on things that ACTUALLY matter.... either getting Better at performing or learning the gear you already DO own backwards and forwards!! You can do GREAT things with even cheap gear if you KNOW it well.... *knowing* your gear is MORE important than what gear you actually have!! And a Great performance matters MORE than Anything!! Learn your gear....the strengths and weaknesses and you will get some Amazing results!!
@angeldqwerty
Sorry David but can you explain how the NTK is not an affordable mic? I’m going to be honest, I have never used one or even seen one in person, but i have used the U87 several times and love it and i think they are pretty close and for the price the NTK seems really appealing to me, mainly because both sounded great and I’d rather buy other stuff. I also have never used anything from behringer, what microphone from the would compete with these two?
@giuliano8031
Angel Diaz Because it costs 500 bucks. Many people can’t afford a Mic that costs that much.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
@giuliano8031 Behringer B1, B2Pro, sE Electronics series and many othrers I put aside to the U87 can do the job. Yes, you are right when say it is important to know own gears and the performance at all. I agree. I'm pasionate about mics and sound and to be honest I feel the differences from different mics, but I made so many test to let understand people that the huge difference in money do not justify the little difference in sound. It is much important the place where you play your performance, the way you record, the performance. All the rest is dust.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
I don’t do that. I put aside lot of cheap mics and you can listen how little is the difference from B1 to U87, for example. Certainly anyone love to play with mics and to change sounds.
@johnnynarcotics7299
David Belcher great advice
@musictutorjaygogoi
Neumann is smooth, plz dont ask how to define smoothness lol.... My ear feels it
@darrellbeets7758
theres no need to explain it ;p its just smooth
@uncarnate
for me ntk here sounds better
@darrellbeets7758
it sounds good i got to give u that, bu nahhhhh no way it sounds better ;p
@jasonrobayo
NTK all the way.
@darrellbeets7758
......
@darrellbeets7758
i just dont get how u can say this, the quallity of the rode sure impressed me dont get me wrong. but to say the ntk is better...no man just listen good the neuman is so much more warm so much better ballanced if u need a mic for broadcasting pick the ntk, nice pressence. need one for vocals choose u87.
@oscarmorales-cn3hz
Thank you very much Paolo!!! They both sound great, but I do not like the low end of the rode very much, loses definition according to what I hear in my headphones. Great work!!!
@alessandrogalassi4222
Grandissimo microfono.
@Hamfantasy56
@dolbi82
@PaoloBalestri Autore
@dolbi82
Self noise a parte 🙄
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Dolbi rdf non proprio.
@dolbi82
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Alcuni microfoni valvolari hanno i pattern regolabili dall’alimentatore.
@dolbi82
ho capito, grazie
@fightsgiantrobots
the neumann definitely has a smoother top end , you can really hear the sibilance poke out on the rode ones. That said, they're definitely comparable!
@ronkopald
it's close, though. But the Neumann is slightly discernably smoother..
@der_djumi_music
yes you also can hear the difference when he's breathing in
@Francis12387
I have questions? Currently I’m using Rode NTK Mic with Avid mbox. Personus Tubepre V2 can support?
@PaoloBalestri Autore
The Presonus is a pre, you don’t need a pre for theNTK. It not need the phantom.
@Francis12387
So what should I need to get a best vocal? Mixer or any other. Pls suggest me
@PaoloBalestri Autore
A place with no reflection.
@ronkopald
I've beaten to death my NTK for almost two decades now, and it is a very good plow horse.
@BattleCorgiTV
mine has been to hell and back and still trucking, had a drop that knocked the metal screen off, loaned it to a friend for over a year who ran phantom power in to it, taken it all over the world and recorded all sorts of voices and instruments in all environments and it just keeps sounding better every time I turn it on. It's not the quietest mic, but through a good pre amp and with the tubes warmed up I've done shootouts against the U87 in a room full of people with zero of them being able to tell the difference. The U87 is flatter though, and it shows when stacking many vocal comps together for a chorus or something. But for the price, this is SUCH a good mic.
@haysfordays
Neumann is multi-dimensional. It combines a bump in high mids, almost a harshness, and rounds it out with balanced tone everywhere else. It creates a more compelling sonic product overall. You get what you pay for..albeit not glaringly obvious to some ears. Your voice is muy bueno.
@romellofarrow5288
nobody here is talking about the fact you can upgrade the tube in the NTK to get much better results. For still well under the cost of the u87
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Romello Farrow from here you can find that! https://www.paolobalestri.com/2016/06/01/rode-ntk-modding-tube-e-capsula/
@OCUBOX
I never thought I would say I liked another mic more than the U87! But here, I do, maybe cause my Italian is not that great yet :)
@RichardPflug
It’s also € 450 vs € 2150. In that perspective it’s David vs Goliath. I own an Røde NTK for voice over and radio work. I picked it up second hand for a bargain more than a decade ago. At some point I changed the tube for a Telefunken E88CC NOS tube. That made it sound slightly fuller in the low end. For my budget and purpose it’s a rock solid mic!
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Richard Pflug Thank you Richard, it’s not a race. Just a test to listen. Most mics works fine not for price, depending from voice and how you use it. I tested many models of mics and many of them could be great for life for a voice talent in voice jobs.
@podcast4you887
Paolo buona domenica.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Ciao!
@thebusinessfirm9862
Microfono Australiano RODE e bellissimo...molto 'round' e 'smooth'. Tutti due sono meravigliosi.
@thebusinessfirm9862
The RODE ribbon mic sounds absolutely gorgeous. It has a silky smooth sound and richness that is a pleasure to listen to. Thanks for making this review, mate.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
My pleasure 🤟
@Rancochannel
@g.m3373
È ottimo anche per doppiaggio? Chiedo perché mi interessa in particolare per i doppiaggi. Grazie.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Sicuramente
@riccardoorioli7598
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Sono contento 🙃
@Rancochannel
@PaoloBalestri Autore
questo è di serie
@Rancochannel
@sottoblue6510
I have the NTK in my home studio, and am very pleased with how it sounds compared to the Neumann. Much closer than I remembered. So clearly my mic technique is the problem, ha ha.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
😂 or mine! May depend also from pre!
@maldonadocorrea
Que interfaz de audio uso ?
@PaoloBalestri Autore
If I remember correctly a Focusrite Saffire 54 on input 7-8, 2KoHm.
@maldonadocorrea
@PaoloBalestri muchas gracias. Excelentes videos como siempre . Abrazo de uruguay 🇺🇾
@1966antonello
@PradigyMusicman
seriously they sound the same. Thank you for this video. Any idiot claiming the 87 sounds 4 times the cost better is crazy. The Rode NTK is one of the most underrated mics ever.
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Yes. I got the U87 and a 67 too. Great machines but have sense if you have customers who want it. At the end of the day most of them (not all!) can’t recognize what mic you used in a blind test.
@simonepallotti1590
Ntk Is even better to me. Smoother dynamic response and warmer. 87 has this elegance in microdynamics which our ears are so subconsciously accustomed to.
@enricotrafeli4425
@enzodefranco3216
@PaoloBalestri Autore
@enzodefranco3216
@PaoloBalestri grazie sempre gentilissimo ed esaudiente 🙏🎙
@delanomoore2977
The NTK has a little more bottom but they sound almost exactly the same!
@scott7521
Dude... you must talk the pants off a lot of ladies
@TheSingingCelebrant
For the massive price different - Get the RODE and make sure you've got a superb interface and plugins
@larrylange9648
It's been interesting to read all the view and comments here. I own a NTK, but did not like the sound, it just was not right. I spent $250 two years ago to find a NOS Telefunken tube from a reputable dealer, and wow, that really made a huge difference once it burned in. Much warmer sound, and it took the edge off the mic. It was worth the money. The Telefunken was around a 1966 vintage, and back then you could buy one for $5. Supply and demand rules. Having said all of this, I still want a U87ai, but they do need to be rolled off about 2 db at 10k. They will sound like the vintage U87's then, and those mics had the best sound. I record saxophone and flute. Having options is a good thing. Having both gives me the sonic character that each of them excels at.
@linomarino9751
@PaoloBalestri Autore

@linomarino9751
sono d'accordo! @PaoloBalestri
@GigiDAmico
I got one second hand now which comes with the EH valve, is it the original?
@PaoloBalestri Autore
Mine had a China tube very similar to the Russian one. I have no idea what Is the stock one. I know Rode still not produce in house the valve so I Guess they use some Chinese.
@GigiDAmico
@PaoloBalestri so probably the previous owner swapped for an Electro Harmonics
@BUFF1500
I hear maybe a slight roll off on the U87 making ever so slightly smoother but that's about it.. I got the NTK bcuz of this video a couple years ago and I'm revisiting this bcuz I'm helping my cousin shop for a mic for home recording. The Rhode is still a great option!
